When Kat and Zach told me they wanted something a little different for their couples session, I was immediately on board ( Hello, have you met me?) Atlanta has no shortage of beautiful photo locations, but there’s something special about choosing a place that already means something to you. Instead of the park at golden hour or a busy loud city street, we spent a rainy afternoon wandering through the Georgia Aquarium in the heart of Atlanta. And honestly? The rain couldn’t have mattered less.
Inside, it was electric.
Between the glowing tanks, the movement of the crowds, and the way Kat and Zach naturally interacted with each other, the entire session felt alive. There was energy everywhere you looked, but somehow the two of them still felt like they were the only people in the room. One thing I tell my couples all the time is that the most crowded locations are sometimes the best locations. That might sound backwards, but hear me out. When you’re surrounded by people, something interesting happens. You stop focusing on the fact that you’re being photographed. You stop wondering where to put your hands or whether you’re doing things “right.” Instead, you start paying attention to each other. You talk. You laugh. You explore. You exist together. As a photographer, that gives me something so much more valuable than perfect posing. While I’m still there gently guiding you, adjusting small details, and making sure we’re creating beautiful images, I get to capture the version of you that feels real. The version that would exist whether a camera was present or not.
That’s exactly what happened with Kat and Zach.
They wandered through exhibits, pointed things out to each other, laughed at their own inside jokes, and completely forgot about me more than once. Those are always my favorite moments because they’re the moments that feel the most honest. As much as I love the energy of a location like the Georgia Aquarium, I almost always like to end sessions somewhere a little quieter. After we’ve spent time creating movement and documenting the experience, I love finding a less crowded corner where we can slow everything down. It’s where we create the close-up images. The intimate moments. The photographs that feel a little more personal and a little more connected to the relationship itself. The combination of both is what makes a session feel complete. A little adventure. A little chaos. A little romance. And for Kat and Zach, it couldn’t have been a more perfect rainy afternoon in Atlanta.
