How I Plan Engagement Sessions That Actually Feel Like You

June 22, 2026

When couples first reach out about wedding photography, one of the first things I tell them is this: your engagement session isn’t just a box to check before the wedding day. It’s the beginning of your story.

As a wedding and engagement photographer based in Mobile, Alabama, that travels all over the Gulf Coast + Beyond ( Hello Chattanooga, ATL, Pensacola, Huntsville) I believe the best photos happen when couples feel comfortable, connected, and completely themselves. That’s why I don’t treat engagement sessions like a one-size-fits-all experience. Instead of taking every couple to the same location and running through the same poses, I take the time to learn who you are, how your relationship works, and what makes your story unique.

It Starts With Getting To Know You

Before we ever pick a location or choose a date, I send my couples a questionnaire designed to help me understand their relationship.

How did you meet?

What do your weekends look like?

What hobbies do you share?

What’s your favorite date night?

Where do you spend the most time together?

The answers to these questions tell me far more than a Pinterest board ever could. They help me create an engagement session that feels personal instead of posed.

Every relationship has its own rhythm, and my goal is to photograph that honestly.

Choosing A Location That Means Something

One of my favorite parts of planning engagement sessions is helping couples choose a location that reflects their story.

Maybe it’s the coffee shop where they spent hours getting to know each other. Maybe it’s the beach they visit every summer. Maybe it’s downtown Mobile, where they had their first date, or a quiet stretch of coastline along the Gulf Coast where they feel most at home.

The location doesn’t have to be extravagant. It just has to mean something.

Some of my favorite engagement sessions have happened in bookstores, theaters, neighborhood streets, local parks, favorite restaurants, and even couples’ homes. When we choose a place that’s connected to your relationship, the photos immediately become more meaningful.

Creating A Session Around Your Personality

Not every couple interacts the same way, and that’s exactly how it should be.

Some couples are adventurous and playful. Others are quiet and intentional. Some love movement and laughter, while others naturally gravitate toward slower, more intimate moments.

Rather than forcing everyone into the same poses, I guide my couples through prompts and experiences that allow their personalities to shine through. This creates photographs that feel genuine instead of staged.

The goal isn’t perfection.

The goal is creating images that feel like memories.

Why Engagement Sessions Matter Before The Wedding

Beyond creating beautiful photos, engagement sessions serve an important purpose leading up to your wedding day.

By the time your wedding arrives, you’ll already know exactly what it’s like to work with me. You’ll know how I direct, how I communicate, and how I help create natural moments in front of the camera.

That familiarity makes a huge difference.

Wedding days move quickly. Having already spent time together means you’re able to relax, trust the process, and focus on what actually matters: celebrating with the people you love.

Many of my couples tell me their engagement session helped them feel significantly more confident and comfortable on their wedding day.

And honestly? That’s one of the biggest reasons I include engagement sessions in every wedding package.

The Best Engagement Photos Tell Your Story

At the end of the day, I don’t want your engagement photos to look like everyone else’s.

I want them to remind you of this season of life.

The way you laugh together.

The places you love.

The little habits and routines you’ll look back on years from now.

Those are the details that matter.

Those are the moments worth remembering.
